Sean Heaton

Maple Grove Boys Track & Field Head Coach

Sean Heaton serves as the Varsity Head Coach for boys and girls cross country, Nordic skiing, and track & field at Maple Grove High School, where he has led programs for the past seven years. Known for his commitment to building strong, unified teams, Heaton emphasizes a philosophy centered on collective success over individual achievement, fostering a culture where every athlete contributes to the team score.

Heaton brings an accomplished athletic background to his coaching. He competed at a high level collegiately, contributing to NSIC Men’s Cross Country team championships from 2015 to 2018 and NCAA Division II Central Regional team titles in 2017 and 2018. Individually, he qualified for the NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Championships, finishing 94th in 2017 and improving to 57th in 2018. Earlier in his career, Heaton was a multi-sport state meet qualifier in Minnesota, competing in cross country (2012, 2013), Nordic skiing (2013, 2014), and track & field (2013). He also competed in the prestigious Drake Relays steeplechase in 2019.

At Maple Grove, Heaton is dedicated to developing student-athletes both on and off the course, building programs that value hard work, teamwork, and long-term growth.

Outside of coaching, Sean enjoys family life with his wife, Mackenzie, whom he met while competing in collegiate cross country and track & field, and their young son, Arthur.
