MJ Carney
Varsity Gymnastics Head Coach
MJ Carney is the Head Gymnastics Coach at Eden Prairie High School, entering her fourth year leading the program. With a strong background in competitive gymnastics and a passion for athlete development, she brings both experience and purpose to her coaching.
Carney began her gymnastics career in the Junior Olympic (J.O.) program, where she achieved remarkable success, winning Minnesota State and Region 4 titles in 2011, 2012, and 2013. She went on to compete at the collegiate level for Auburn University from 2013 to 2017. One of her most memorable achievements at Auburn was helping her team win their Regional competition and advance to the NCAA National Championship for the first time in 22 years.
As a coach, Carney’s philosophy goes beyond athletic performance. She emphasizes character development, believing that sports serve as a platform for teaching life skills. “We’re not building athletes—we’re building good human beings who play sport,” she says. “Gymnastics is the vehicle where we teach discipline, resilience, accountability, and how to show up for something bigger than yourself, even on the days you don’t feel like it.”
Outside of the gym, Carney lives in Chanhassen with her husband and their two children. She enjoys spending time with her family, especially taking walks around their neighborhood and exploring new playgrounds together.
