Pat O'Leary
Varsity Boys Hockey Head Coach
Pat O’Leary is a respected leader in Minnesota high school hockey, currently serving as the Head Boys Hockey Coach at Wayzata High School, a position he has held for 16 years. Known for his commitment to excellence both on and off the ice, O’Leary has built a program centered on accountability, development, and community pride.
Before taking over at Wayzata, O’Leary gained valuable coaching experience as a varsity assistant at both Wayzata (3 years) and Orono High School (3 years), helping shape competitive programs and mentoring student-athletes.
As a player, O’Leary’s hockey career was equally distinguished. A standout at Armstrong High School, he was named a Mr. Hockey Finalist in 1998 and went on to be selected in the 3rd round of the 1998 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. He continued his career at the University of Minnesota, where he was a member of the 2002 NCAA National Championship team.
Under O’Leary’s leadership, Wayzata has achieved significant success, highlighted by a 2016 AA State Championship. That same year, he was named AA Head Coach of the Year, recognizing his impact on the program and the broader hockey community. He has also been honored as Section 6 Coach of the Year in both 2021 and 2026.
O’Leary’s coaching philosophy is rooted in representing his school, community, and families at the highest level every day. He emphasizes character, teamwork, and a standard of excellence that extends beyond the rink.
He resides with his wife, Carly, and their two daughters, Lyla and Eili.
