Chase Cayo is a coach for the STMA Boys Track and Field program, bringing with him a decorated background as both an athlete and leader. A proud graduate of St. Michael–Albertville High School, Chase set the school record in the cross country 5k and indoor 3200 meters, while ranking second all-time in the 3200 and third in the 1600. During his high school career, he earned All-State honors twice in cross country and three times in track and field.
Chase continued his running career at South Dakota State University, where he became one of the program’s most accomplished distance runners. He was a four-time All-Conference performer in cross country, earning the titles of Summit League MVP and Summit League Athlete of the Year in 2017. He helped lead the SDSU men’s team to four consecutive Summit League team titles in cross country from 2016 to 2019. On the track, Chase captured Summit League titles in the indoor 5,000 meters and outdoor 10,000 meters in 2018. His personal best of 29:19 in the 10,000 meters ranks third all-time in SDSU history, and he remains among the program’s top ten performers in the indoor 3k, 5k, and outdoor 5k and 10k.
Since returning to STMA, Chase has helped guide the boys’ program to continued success, including True Team Section Championships in 2025 (4AAA), Section 8AAA Track and Field titles in 2023 and 2025, and a Section 8AAA Runner-Up finish in 2024. The boys’ cross country team also captured the 2024 Section 8AAA Championship under his leadership.
Chase’s coaching philosophy centers on teamwork, hard work, goal-setting, and developing confident, positive leaders. He emphasizes the importance of enjoying competition and the daily process of improvement, inspiring athletes to chase excellence both on and off the track.
