Matt Gabrielson

Boys Varsity Track & Field Head Coach

Matt Gabrielson has built a distinguished career in both athletics and coaching, marked by excellence, longevity, and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes. Currently serving as the Head Boys Track & Field Coach at Edina High School, Gabrielson brings over two decades of coaching experience, beginning in 2003. His coaching journey includes roles as an assistant at the University of St. Thomas (cross country), assistant coach for Edina’s boys track and field and cross country programs, and, since 2011, Head Coach of the Edina Girls Cross Country team. Since 2019, he has led the Edina boys track and field program.

As an athlete, Gabrielson achieved national and international success. A four-time state champion at Belmond-Klemme High School, he went on to Drake University, where he earned 12 All-MVC honors in track and cross country. He qualified for the Olympic Trials three times across track and field and the marathon, represented the United States in four international competitions, and ranked among the top 10 in the U.S. in both the 5,000 meters and marathon in 2008. That same year, he finished as runner-up at the Twin Cities Marathon.

Gabrielson’s coaching accolades reflect sustained excellence. He has led teams to five state championships in girls cross country and has been recognized with numerous honors, including MSHSCA Cross Country Coach of the Year (2016), Section 6AAA Track & Field Coach of the Year (2025), and finalist for National High School Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year. He is also a member of the MSHCA Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame and the Edina Athletic Boosters Hall of Fame.

At the core of Gabrielson’s philosophy is a belief that coaching is rooted in pedagogy, supported by science, and shaped by experience. He views coaching as a calling—one that emphasizes teaching life lessons through sport and prioritizing people over methods. This philosophy is reflected in the character and achievements of his student-athletes.

Outside of coaching, Gabrielson enjoys family life with his wife, Julie, a member of six Big Ten Championship track and field teams at the University of Minnesota, and their three children—Mae, Otto, and Viola—along with their Cavapoo, Penny.
